Personal computer memory card international association

(PCMCIA, or "PC Card") An international trade association and the standards they have developed for devicies, such as modems and external hard disk drives, that can be plugged into notebook computers. A PCMCIA card is about the size of a credit card. For some unfathomable reason, around 1995 they decided to rename PCMCIA cards "PC Cards", perhaps to encourage sales to confused purchasers.
